Terri Lynch, Honey Sanchez, Gwen Miller and the rest of those angelic creatures could really gouge. One of the players wore glasses (might have been Reilly, not sure) and I found that hysterical considering players were getting whacked in the chops during the National Anthem.

Mine were Ralphie Valladeres, John Hall, and Danny Reilly. I think setting an opponent on fire was the only infraction worthy of a penalty. Dick walked us through the finer points of the sport – which cheap shots were legal and which were not. With his catch phrase “ Whoa Nellie!” after every blow to the kidney, Lane delighted Angelinos with his exciting call. The T-Bird's announcer on KTLA was colorful Dick Lane. There might have been leagues in Kansas City and Mobile too. I’d like to say they were world champions every year but it seemed the annual post season playoffs took place every six weeks. T-Bird games were live on Channel 5 at least once a week. There was this bogus league that included the T-Birds and three or four other teams. Women hitting and elbowing and clotheslining each other. But wait! There’s more! It’s a coed sport!!! The T-Birds had a men’s squad and a ladies’ squad. And confusion because you have both offense and defense taking place simultaneously. There is a lot of hitting, pushing, elbowing, and tripping in this finesse competition. One member from each team wears a beanie called a “jammer cap” and accrues points by passing opposing team members. Two teams of five skaters go around and around. What is the roller derby? It’s a banked oval track. If only Hollywood royalty like Jack Nicholson and prison elite like Mike Tyson had fancied the rink instead of the hardwood, folks in the southland might be driving around with T-Bird flags on their cars. Our team - the Los Angeles Thunderbirds - outdrew the Lakers for a couple of years. For me, growing up in the 60s in LA, the roller derby was a big part of the local landscape. I wonder if today’s young cineplexgoers will have any connection to this elegant sport.

#Thunderbird roller rink movie
I see there’s a new movie coming out about the roller derby (WHIP IT, directed by Drew Barrymore). We showed up around 2 to get an early skate. We had a reservation for 3, skate from 3-4, party at 4. The only recommendation I would make is to be sure you have yourself very put together as a group because they are extremely efficient and move very fast paced from one event to another, be flexible and kind towards the staff and be sure to arrive earlier than your expected times to skate or prepare to stay and skate after the party festivities as we found the event planning left little time for skating unless you give yourself more time than the one hour of skate within your party reservation. They always kept me up to date on each moment and the step by step procedures that helped the party run very smooth from one event to the other, it went off without a hitch, very pleased and would definitely recommend for the future. Flag as inappropriate What a rockin' place to have my daughter's 8th birthday party! The staff were all very courteous, and fulfilled their obligations accordingly.
